Over the past weekend Joe attended the 30th of Wānanga Taonga Puoro ki Pōneke. They started running wānanga in October of 2018. We want to say a huge Mihi to Sam and the team who have worked hard to run these wānanga for people to attend, hone in their skills and develop their knowledge providing the dedicated workspace and time to do so.

Joe first mentions just how well the wānanga flowed. Sam was very laid back and spoke in an uplifting and empowering way. Joe felt very comfortable which was the perfect environment for him to learn.
Sam taught about using different tools, like chisels, mallets, and planes. He spoke of how to use these tools effectively and responsibly. He taught about woodgrain and about listening to the wood you use.
Joe spent his time immersed in the creative process; learning shortcuts and tricks to work more effectively. He also enjoyed the kōrero with the other students .

Finally Sam taught about different ways of playing. He explained in ways that Joe hadn't heard before. Joe was excited to learn from other Tāne and it ignited in him with a renewed sense of freshness for the creating process. Joe went in with more knowledge than most others there and left feeling like he had just learned so much. There was something to learn for every person there and Joe is excited to go to the next level of course avaliable. This is a highly recommended wānanga for anyone to learn how to make Taonga Puoro.
